So glad to see Gensler’s new Product Sustainability Standards for the building industry are out and include workstations and task chairs. Moving the industry towards standards for sustainability that are transparent, credible, and easy to use is critical.
 
Architects and designers should be considering sustainability in the decisions they make about commercial furniture, but they’ve not had reliable data to make those decisions. Gensler’s new standards, covering 12 different categories of items used inside buildings, from ceiling tiles to paint and carpet tiles, will help. The standards rely on existing traceability data, including lifecycle and indoor air impacts.
 
We welcome these standards. They are critical to building a more circular economy, where office furniture is reused, resold or recycled, instead of going to landfill. Next up: Developing standards for the sustainable decommissions of workplaces, and consistent metrics and processes.
