Community Impact: Turning Office Furniture into Opportunities in Birmingham

I’m thrilled to share this new video. It’s one of our favorite decommission projects last year: A six-story office in Birmingham, AL, headquarters for Vulcan Materials Company, the nation’s largest producer of construction aggregates like crushed stone, sand, gravel, asphalt and ready-mix concrete. Vulcan’s priority for the project was avoiding landfill waste and serving the Birmingham community.

The project, a partnership with MillerKnoll dealer Business Interiors, Inc, was big and complicated, but very successful. In all we diverted 597,400 pounds of furniture and office fixtures from landfill, or 99.7% of everything, and donated items to 22 nonprofits and community groups.

About 41% of the items were donated, 40% were sold and 19% of them recycled. We even found a use for 1,200 work surfaces that cannot be recycled, purchasing legs so one of the nonprofits, King’s Home, could turn them into tables to be sold in their thrift store.

These stories are the reason we do what we do! Thank you Vulcan for helping us keep furniture out of landfill while serving communities and bravo to all involved!

Together, we’re getting zero done. Contact us to learn more.
